Selecting a Food Supply

Store at least a 3-day supply of non-perishable food. Select foods that require no refrigeration, little or no preparation or cooking, and little or no water. If you must heat food, pack a can of Sterno canned heat. Select food items that are compact and lightweight. Avoid foods that will make you thirsty. Perishable Food Inventory

Include a selection of the following foods in your Disaster Supplies Kit:

  • High energy foods such as peanut butter, jelly, crackers, granola bars,and trail mix
  • Canned juices, milk, soup (if powdered, store extra water)
  • Comfort or stress foods such as cookies, hard candy, sweetened cereals, lollipops, instant coffee, and tea bags
  • Foods for infants, elderly persons, or persons with special dietary needs
  • Ready-to-eat canned meats, fruits and vegetables
  • Staples such as sugar, salt, pepper
  • Vitamins
